PUBLIC SPEAKER

AKILIAH

I am a public speaker, social justice advocate and slam poetry artist with a video editing/media marketing background.

I celebrate my identity as a queer person of color and align myself with brands that do the same.

2023

about me

As a child, social justice advocates in media, public communications/ entertainment and how public figures use these, inspired me as well as giving a deep admiration for anyone in the industry; thus inspiring me to use my own artistic qualities to promote positive change within issues for which I am passionate about.

From performing on stage to creating my own content with filming equipment, society and media has been a catalyst and intention behind any of my works- both in and out of the spotlight.

One thing I have achieved that I am most proud of (and also played a massive factor in kickstarting my journey of utilising my platforms to spread my creativity, heart, experiences and mind) is the first public speech I performed in June 2020 at a Black Lives Matter protest following the murder of George Floyd. I read out an 'open letter' to myself in the form of a slam poem named 'Dear Brown Child' in front of thousands of people which I had never done before. It is my biggest achievement so far that I proudly allow myself to be open and vulnerable about because I used to struggle severely with social anxiety as a child, and this day was a test to prove that I am able to overcome my anxieties and utilise my creativity to make positive change.

'Come and see @iamakiliah perform at our BLM Fundraiser Event!

Akiliah is co-organiser of The UNITY Movement UK and its BLM group, community leader and representative for the UK under Dose Of Society and strives to use their experiences as a creative drive and motivation for others to amplify their voice in the same way she is learning to use hers. Akiliah's journey with public speaking and social justice activism began last year after their first-ever speech, 'Dear Brown Child' received a lot of attention on Instagram during the rise in the BLM Movement in June 2020. Her biggest inspirations for the creativity she produces are their little sister, close friends and learning from other activists and educators around the world.'

Snow Covered Trees

NATIONAL STUDENT PRIDE:

  • Creating content and engaging with the panellists at the National Student Pride festival weekend (i.e. Emile Sande, The Future X, RuPaul Drag Race Season 13 finalist: The Rose, etc)
  • Interview host (as well as filming) for vox pops with talents on the Pink carpet and festival rooms
  • Executive Director, Video Editor and Motion Graphics Designer for their interviews and promotional videos
  • Part of the talent cast for the National Student Pride interviews and promotional videos

I also have an original series on NSP’s Instagram and TikTok called ‘Pride-inspired makeup looks' in which I educate and spread awareness about the history of an LGBTQ+ flag per episode, whilst giving a makeup tutorial that is inspired by the flag. This was an original idea that was proposed by myself because I wanted to incorporate and utilise my love for makeup into a positive and engaging experience that had not been done before at National Student Pride.
